Through personal experience I’ve developed my own unique definition for “haunted house”, but let us see what Wikipedia has to say:

haunted housespook house or ghost house in ghostlore is a house or other building often perceived as being inhabited by disembodied spirits of the deceased who may have been former residents or were otherwise connected with the property. Parapsychologists often attribute haunting to the spirits of the dead who have suffered from violent or tragic events in the building's past such as murder, accidental death, or suicide.[1]

Seems about right, and resonates with the majority of horror movies out there. The truth is most people at least know what a haunted house is, and a lot of people have experienced them first hand.

When I tell the story of my home pre-healing era I often reference it as haunted, mostly for lack of a better term.

Also because anyone can know what I’m talking about when I say “haunted house”. My home isn’t haunted anymore thankfully. In fact using that term now almost feels derogatory in a way that is hard to articulate, but let me try.

My home at one point seemed to be a welcoming place for earthbound spirits travelling along the railway, as I live right next to it. Check out my other blog post here about living next to the railway.

One spirit in particular liked it so much he decided to stick around. He was from the 40’s era, fedora hat, cigar smoke etc.

After I had my baby and my psychic senses were activating like crazy, I would occasionally get a strong smell of smoke in the home. One night as I was nursing my baby to sleep, I saw him peering through my bedroom window like a Peeping Tom.

Okay, THAT IS IT I thought to myself, and I reached the breaking point that led me to hiring professional help, and healing my home.

So this spirit wasn’t necessarily being aggressive, nor was he particularly connected to the property’s history. He just happened to be passing through and decided he liked it. Otherwise, he was just being a little too creepy for my liking.

The key detail about this spirit as it pertains to my home is that he wasn’t connected to source. Spirits that are not connected to THE source, need to find an energy source elsewhere. To my detriment, this spirit was siphoning energy from myself, my space and I believe even my dog. Looking back, it really, REALLY explains a lot. Not to mention at the time I had no concept of energetic hygiene let alone boundaries and protection.

It’s interesting to me, to consider that had my psychic senses not been online yet, I may not have detected his presence. My husband certainly didn’t notice or sense a ghost in the house.

What I DO know is that my life did a 180 after clearing the presence of earthbound spirits from my property.

My depression began to lift, I was able to think more clearly and my overall life satisfaction improved. As a result I was able to be a better, healthier mom to my daughter.

Did I consider my house as haunted at the time? No.

Was there a ghost(s) lingering in my space? Yes.

Was it having a detrimental affect on me AND my family? Yes.

It makes me ponder how many people are out there living in homes like mine, where the energy of the space is being influenced detrimentally by outside sources like earthbound spirits, in a subtle way. In a less detectable way.

Until I can find a new term used to name a space being influenced by earthbound spirits in a more casual, subtle manner, I conclude that “haunted” is a spectrum.

On one end of the spectrum you have homes that write scripts for horror movies likened to Wikipedia’s description. On the other end of the spectrum you have homes that were like mine… haunted, but in a subtle fashion by non aggressive spirits that are not connected to source.

I find this topic so fascinating and I wish more people were aware of the energetic quality of their space, and how it affects them.

To conclude this blog post I ask you to pick which scenario you would consider to be worse:

A) Live in a house where ghosts are noticeably unhappy and causing loud noises, electrical disturbances, cupboards opening and closing etc.

B) Live in a house where ghosts are present but relatively unnoticeable. They are quietly siphoning energy from you. Your depression, fatigue and irritability is getting passed off as another symptom of mold exposure, or illness. This starts causing relationship issues and spirals from there.

The crazy thing is that scenario A is so obvious, it leads to resolution much quicker. At least you know what you are dealing with.

The more I’ve come to learn about earthbound spirits or ghosts, and free will, the less fear I have.

At one point these spirits were just another person in a human body like you or I, and due to their free will they continue to wander the earthly plane. I have sympathy for spirits who linger on the extreme end of the haunted house spectrum, as they clearly have not found peace due to horrible reasons I’m sure.

All things considered, my home is my sacred space. For the same reasons I don’t let just anyone come into my home, I don’t let unwelcome spirits in either.

If you are reading this and recognizing your home is dealing with some similar challenges that mine was, I invite you to learn more about my property reading service, and how I may be able to help you!
